Job Title:Library Cultural Arts Assistant IDepartment:Library Reports to:Various FLSA Classification:Non-ExemptEffective Date:03/05/2021Job Summary:The purpose of this position is to provide the highest level of specialized skills necessary to the operation of a unit in the Library & Cultural Arts Department. The Library/Cultural Arts Assistant I is responsible for providing high-quality service in the library and Arts department. As well as promoting an accommodating, welcoming library environment and in public within the community.Essential Job Functions:Note: This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The list of essential functions below does not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent in this position. Register borrowers, issue library cards and keep records of new registrants; assist with patrons library servicesOrganize and provide assistance to librarians with the maintenance of library and audiovisual materialsProvides assistance to patrons with researching and obtaining information from library or archival collections.Maintain and assist with entire operations of caf shop.May assist with the management of cultural merchandising program.Participate/assist in planning and coordinating library events, programs, cultural arts events, and puppet shows.Process all new and donated materials received for the collection.Assist with computer and network issues, set up of new computers and software and computer updates.Assist in the coordination of a wide variety of art-related programs.Assist in the review of event planning. Assist in the design, planning, installation, and maintenance of art exhibitions.Process the marketing of art galleries, programs, events and community alerts.Performs drafting arts-related contracts specific to the arts; assist in the evaluation of art.May draft press releases for programs and events.May coordinate with coordinate art exhibits, artist exchanges, and resource sharing collaborations to build and foster a regional arts network.Assist in editing and publishing brochures, books, newsletters, and other Arts publications.May spearhead/assist in planning the annual program and events calendar.May organize receptions for new artwork exhibits, book releases, and library cultural arts receptions.Provide the best comprehensive service to patrons and citizens at programs or events.Attend department meetings, assist in taking notes when necessary.Assist with set-up of events and demobilization.Performs related work and reports as assigned.Conditions of Employment:Applicant will be subject to a complete background investigation. Incomplete, inaccurate and/or failure to report information will cause the applicant rejection from consideration.Applicant must take and pass a pre-employment drug test administered by the City of Edinburg at the City's expense.Must have a current valid class "C" driver's license from the Texas Department of Public Safety with a satisfactory driving record.Bilingual English/Spanish required.Required Education:Associates DegreeEducation Preference:Bachelor Degree in related fieldEducational Substitute:Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience; may be substituted for the above requirementsRequired Work Experience:Requires under and including one (1) year of library/event planning experienceExperience Preference:Three (3) years of Library/cultural event planning experience including working with childrenSupervisory Experience Requirement:Not ApplicableRequired Knowledge, Skills, & AbilitiesWork may require providing advice to others outside direct reporting relationships on specific problems or general policies. Contacts may require the consideration of different points of view to reach agreement. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.a) Basic principles and procedures, relevant to art programs and community events.b) Intermediate computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment; includes Excel, Word, Publisher, database management, and record keeping. c) Knowledge of Dewey Decimal System.d) Customer Service skills.e) Prepare clear, accurate and well-organized written materials.f) Effectively express ideas and communicate work-related information to co-workers. g) Establish and maintain good working relationships with staff, the general public, and representatives of other departments and organizations. h) Gather and analyze information; prioritize and organize multiple assignments and projects.Equipment Materials:General office and safety equipment/materials to include but not limited to the following: Personal computer Copier/Fax Machine Printer/Scanner Paper Cutter 10-key Calculator Cash Register City Vehicle Laminating Machine Work Conditions:Relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Office and outdoor environment for events.Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and / or hazards. Occasional outside work.Physical Demands:The job has moderate hazards and physical demands are low to moderate.Duties involve considerable bending, lifting, carrying, or walking and/orUsing equal to lifting 25-50 pounds. Standing and walking for longer periods of time during events.Mental Demands: While performing the duties of this class, the incumbent is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data,
