Job Title:Water Plant Operator IDepartment:Utility DepartmentReports to:Water Plant Operator IIFLSA Classification:Non-ExemptEffective Date:03/05/2021Job Summary:Performs complex maintenance and operations with the water plant system. Work involves operating and maintaining essential equipment, troubleshooting issues, water samples and tests, working with chemicals, maintaining logs, ensuring the cleanliness and organization of the building, and grounds at the Water Plant. Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.Essential Job Functions:Note: This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The list of essential functions below does not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent in this position.Collect water samples; utilize specific chemicals, conduct laboratory analysis and interpret test results.Maintain proper water levels in storage tanks, wells, temperature of water, water flows and operating valves.Maintain and clean buildings, other facilities and grounds at the Water Plant as assigned by the Manager.Remove sludge from sludge lagoon, and maintain and repair pumps, equipment and other machinery.Check chemical feeders for proper operation and perform secondary testing to ensure proper chemical levels, repair valves, water lines; and chemical feed lines at filters.Assures that Plant optimization is achieved through proper chemical applications and water quality testing.Handle incoming calls customer complaints and direct calls to proper departments.h. Performs related work and reports as assigned.Conditions of Employment:a. Applicant will be subject to a complete background investigation. Incomplete, inaccurate and/or failure to report information will cause the applicant rejection from consideration.b. Applicant must take and pass a pre-employment drug test administered by the City of Edinburg at the City's expense.c. Must have a current valid class "C" driver's license from the Texas Department of Public Safety with a satisfactory driving record.d. Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred.e. Achieve TCEQ Class "D" Surface Water License within first (1) year of employment.f. Achieve TCEQ Class "C" Surface Water License within three (3) year of employment.Required Education:High school diploma, GED or equivalency.Education Preference:Community college, vocational, business, technical coursework.Educational Substitute:Equivalent combination of education and experience.Required Work Experience:Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations maintenance and repairs.Experience Preference:Three (3) years of experience in related fields.Supervisory Experience Requirement:Not ApplicableRequired Knowledge, Skills, & Abilitiesa. Requires a working knowledge of water treatment operations, lab operations, water sampling and recoding of results.b. Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.c. Performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired results.d. Work requires a comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization.e. Intermediate computer skills in database management, and record keeping, and in SCADA software systems.Equipment Materials:General office and safety equipment/materials to include but not limited to the following:Personal computerCopier/Fax Machine/Printer/ScannerPumps/Gauges/GeneratorsSCADA systemDump Truck/City VehicleLab/Protective Clothing/Safety EquipmentWork Conditions:The employee will be preforming with frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.Physical Demands:The job has some significant exposure to hazards and physical demands are moderate. Duties involve working with lightweight materials and/or using force equal to lifting 20 - 25 pounds.Mental Demands:While performing the duties of this class, the incumbent is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; use math and mathematical reasoning; perform detailed work, multiple tasks; work with constant interruptions; and interact with staff and the public.
