Job Summary:

The purpose of this position is to repair machinery, structures, and containers through the welding process. Other duties include fabricating equipment in all phases of fleet, participating in collection maintenance operations, inspecting, repairing and maintaining metal system components on vehicles and equipment to meet state and OM inspection requirements, and other duties as required.

Essential Job Functions:

a. Interprets and uses blueprints, welding specifications and welding procedures;

b. Select fabrication equipment and plans layout, assembly and welding procedures.

c. Bolt, clamp and tack-weld parts to secure in position for welding.

d. Set up equipment and weld parts using Arc, Gas-Shielded Arc, or Gas Welding equipment.

e. Operate a forklift and/or lifting devices for movement of parts.

f. Repair products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping and reassembling parts.

g. Utilize fabrication equipment such as plate rolling machines, plate cutting machines, cutting torch or other.

h. Performs related work and reports as assigned.

Conditions of Employment:

a. Applicant will be subject to a complete background investigation. Incomplete, inaccurate and/or failure to report information will cause the applicant rejection from consideration.

b. Applicant must take and pass a pre-employment drug test administered by the City of Edinburg at the City's expense.

c. Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred.

Additional Requirements:

d. Must have a current and valid Class "C" drivers or a Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a satisfactory driving record and/or have the ability to obtain a Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License from the Texas Department of Public Safety within the first year of employment.

Solid Waste Management Requirement:

a. Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a HAZMAT endorsement within first year of employment.

Required Education:

High school diploma, GED or equivalency.

Education Preference:

Community college, vocational, business, technical, or correspondence schools certificates are likely sources.

Required Work Experience:

Requires three (3) years of experience in welding, gas and diesel engine repair, and maintenance work.

Experience Preference:

Five (5) years of experience in welding, gas and diesel engine repair, and maintenance work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

a. Weld and demonstrate proficiency in MIG, STICK, TIG, or SUBARC and successfully complete a comprehensive fabrication skills test; utilize and read welding measuring devices to include but not limited to squares, levels and tape measures; able to make repair welds using fabrication equipment to include but not limited to using cutting torches, hand grinders, surface grinders and wheel grinders.

b. Requires a working knowledge of welding fabrication and repair, and hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities.

c. Possess basic math skills to include but not limited to adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, geometry and algebra for the purpose calculating material fabrication

d. Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of information.

e. Normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired results. There is some opportunity for discretion when selecting among a few, easily identifiable choices.

f. Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization.

g. Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools used in modern welding fabrication and repair.

h. Skilled in operation of related tools and equipment.

i. Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of vehicle maintenance.

j. Knowledge and application of state and federal law, the Company ISO Quality Program and procedures, Company policies and Safety and Environmental Regulations.

General office and safety equipment/materials to include but not limited to the following:

  • 10-key Calculator
  • MIG/STICK/TIG/SUBARC
  • Plate rolling machine/Plate cutting machine
  • Cutting Torch
  • Welding Fabrication Equipment

Work Conditions:

The employee will be subject to frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.

Physical Demands:

The job has significant exposure to hazards and physical demands are high, and require constant fine dexterity, vision, hearing, and handling of paperwork. Duties involve working with heavyweight materials and/or using force equal to lifting 50 pounds.

Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of this class, the incumbent is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; use math and mathematical reasoning; perform detailed work, multiple tasks; work with constant interruptions; and interact with staff and the public.
